ST-Computer PD - Public Domain

ST-Computer, also known as "series S", is one of the biggest public domain series for the Atari ST at 1000 disks. Originally published from 1986 to 1996, the series showed the growing sophistication of Atari ST software and the slow change towards more multitasking-friendly and cleanly written applications.

  • POV (Persistance of Vision) 1 of 2
A reliable stable followup to POV 2.2 has finally arrived on the Atari thanks to Doug Little's porting of the PC sources. This latest version is downwardly compatible with POV 2.2 but with dozens of new features and bug fixes. Amongst the new features is the ability to render a screen preview when running on a Falcon. Another major improvement is the incorporation of the faster routines from FTPOV. Like v2.2, this version features hundreds of scenes for you to render yourself, all grouped according to your level of experience. The on-disk manual's huge, running to over 800K and is very well written, starting out with an easy to understand introduction to ray tracing, then moving progressively to the more advanced stuff. It also includes several detailed tutorials, all aimed at different ability levels.

  • MIDIWiz
It's the old story of a peaceful kingdom governed by a wise king, who dies without naming a successor. As a result, his six sons get greedy and want the best parts of the kingdom for themselves. You play the part of one of the six sons, preparing to battle it out with your brothers. Midi Wiz uses an overhead view like Nethack and Gauntlet and is a sort of trading/conquest game. You must increase your armed forces, build fortifications and of course trade goods with others. The use of magic to invent things (a bit like Dino Dudes but not so much fun!), create dragons, elephants, healing potions etc, all adds to the appeal. As the name suggests, Midi Wiz allows several computers to be linked together in a Midi network so that you can compete against others in real time. As the game runs on any Atari computer, you could easily link up an ST, TT and Falcon in a network. This unregistered version does not let you save your progress, limits the size of the network to three computers and has a few more restrictions.
