A versatile English spelling checker. Requires an Atari ST with at least 400 k of free memory. Spell/ST reads text from a file, breaks that text up into words, looks up each word in a dictionary, and displays those words that it couldn't find. It has some knowledge of plurals, suffixes and prefixes. Spell/ST ignores some text-formatting commands and works on 1st. Word Plus '.DOC' files. An excellent program originating from Denmark which prints out a 1st Word/1st Word Plus document in various fonts. The fonts must have been created using Tegnedit font editor which is included on the disk. These fonts are suitable for most 9-pin printers. -
WDSpell
Includes a spell checker, word counter and dictionary editor. Although the dictionary is small (6000 words) it can be easily added to and is simple to use. It will check 1st Word or ASCII files. Very well documented. -

Elvis 1.4
Elvis is a clone of vi/ex, the standard UNIX editor. Elvis supports nearly all of the vi/ex commands, in both visual mode and colon mode. Like vi/ex, Elvis stores most of the text in a temporary file, instead of RAM. This allows it to edit files that are too large to fit in a single process' data space. Also, the edit buffer can survive a power failure or crash. Color or mono.

2 Columns
This program prints simple text (ASCII) or 1STWORD format files in two "magazine" style columns. It works best if you have a printer capable of printing at 20 characters per inch ( my printer calls this "compressed elite"). Files printed this way use much less paper and are easier to refer to than if they are printed normally. It works very well for printing program listings, BBS captures, and program documentation. -

Helpful Horace
An easy to use two column printing program. It takes a standard ASCII file and lets you specify the settings you want. It can then be output as a one or two column document. This will save lots of paper when printing lengthy readmes, assuming your printer supports condensed printing.

The Ultimate Converter (TUC) 1.02
Allows you to convert word processor files from any format to any format. At least that's the theory! It works by converting the often non-printable ASCII character used to represent eg bold or italic on one word processor to those used on another word processor. Example script files allow you to convert executable programs to and from ASCII (useful for performing translations) and from First Word to RTF, Protext v4.3 to Wordstar, Protext v4.3 to RTF, ASCII to RTF, Write On to RTF, Word Perfect v5.0 to RTF, Word Perfect v5.1 to RTF and Wordstar to RTF. Obviously you could alter the scripts to allow any of these to convert to any other or even introduce new conversions if you know the codes used by the appropriate word processor(s). The docs are easily followed and explain the command language used in the scripts. -

This converter program is unique in that it works off of a translation parameter file that could be edited to convert the 1st Word Plus files into ANY other format - assuming you knew the specifics of the file format you wanted to convert to. -
Pages 1.0
Lets assume that you are printing out a document in booklet form. Type in the total number of pages and 'Pages' will tell you which page should go where i.e. sheet number, front left, back right etc, so that your booklet comes out in the right order. -
UNFORM 3.0
This removes trailing spaces at the end of lines, removes any left margin from text files and deletes extra carriage returns and line feeds present in some files captured on-line. All three options can of course be switched on or off to suit. Runs as a PRG or ACC.

The Atari version of this popular Unix text editor. JOVE is a modified version of EMACS but has gained popularity in its own right. It's entirely text based and blatantly unfriendly to the newcomer. It's a 100% faithful implementation of JOVE.
