Mini Magic Storybook
Most Atari users will be familiar with the commercial 'Magic Story Book' by J and R Dunn. This product was hailed by most reviewers as an excellent method of programming stories in book format with both text and sprites. As such it was released on an ST Format cover disk. This disk contains the Shareware release MINI MAGIC STORYBOOK and the registered version takes the user beyond the commercial version of MAGIC STORYBOOK. The unregistered version will give you a good idea of what to expect from the full product. NOT TOS 2 upwards.

Let's Spell 1st 500 Intro
Please read the manual before attempting to use the program as an entry code (11111) is given. A screen display of an apple, a drill, a pig and lots of sundry items leads (on one column only) to a relevant second screen. The apple is related to a greengrocer's for example. Clicking on various objects on display requires that each one be spelled out in English or French. Letters are selected from a grid at the bottom, complete with French accents. This is coupled to a voice, spelling out the letters. Diction is very clear and the graphics are good. A wrong answer is followed by an automatic spelling of the word. Certainly enough scope to stimulate interest in paying out £10 for the full 500 word program which is of a professional standard. Some of the French words are not in frequent use so you can learn as you go.

Super Mapper
The opening screen gives instructions in Bengali, Urdu and English and the aim of the game is guide the little man around the screen to various localities such as a restaurant, bus station, bank etc; via a mouse controlled scroll, horizontally or vertically. There are three levels of difficulty and a question at the end of each level. The concept is good but the scrolling is very slow and the game can become tiresome if one is heading in the wrong direction and has to backtrack. Ideal for young children familiarising themselves with the computer and the mouse.

Four Years
This module has six units therein and the state of play is just right for 4 year olds. 'Colour' provides simple pictures which are coloured via mouse selection from a simple palette. 'Mirror' should entertain the kids by simple reflection of everything drawn either horizontally or vertically. Nitpick' displays an array of two similar looking letters. You must click on each instance of the specified letter. Although the lower levels are suited to a young child, the higher ones are difficult even for adults! 'Tile one' is simply a case of filling in a grid with coloured tiles. 'Tile 2' lets you draw in colour in the left hand square and watch it being reflected in the right hand square. 'Typewriter program' is a lot of fun for the young. A keyboard is shown with one coloured letter which must be typed in. As the process continues, the words to 'Baa Baa Black Sheep' are built up and part of the tune is played each time a verse is completed. -
Play Maths
An educational platforms and ladders game which offers standard addition, subtraction etc; with a more unusual presentation. A 'creature' has to be guided through different mazes to land on the correct number sequence required for easy, medium and difficult questions. The 'difficult' maths are best done with a simple calculator.

-
Masterdoodle
An elementary drawing package suitable for the 5-6 year old group. Standard squares, circles, writing, colours, pens etc. Fill patterns are there, plus 4O pictures available for editing. These are 'pixel pics' as in sprite designs. Use the 'camera' to paste them. Pleasantly presented and easy to use.

Picture Time
A great program for young children. Choose a picture from a selection of 4 and paste images from a good selection onto same. Having stuck your funny men, geese, trees, cows etc; wherever you wish, the OUTLINE of the finished picture may be printed out for children to colour in themselves. Mouse controlled and Epson compatible. -
Sample Time
Another happy piece of programming. This one is slightly more complicated for younger children but I am sure any adult will be happy to participate! Essentially, pictures are located in sequence boxes and sampled sounds can be added to each one. Create a sequence of dogs barking, geese doing their thing, sirens, people and so forth. The Manual explains all. -
Weather Time
This one is all about weather in the Michael Fish style! A map of Britain is provided with a complete collection of genuine weather icons available as stickers. Select from the weather bank on screen eg; clouds, rain, sun, gales, text, morning, afternoon, outlook rtc. Forecast the lot at any point on the map. Great fun for children. Maps may be cleared, saved to memory and printed (Epson compatible) or saved to disk and transferred to an art package for further transformations.

Workout in French
A general purpose or revision aid which provides the user with an excellent method of entering questions and answers on any subject of their choice. A line length of 52 characters for questions and 68 for answers is very liberal. The program is set for French questions and answers but the extensive manual on disk will help you on your way to creating your own. The initial screen holds all the settings required at the click of the mouse. Workout is programmed to accept minor variations in the answers. Useful for any subject and any age group. It only requires adult supervision to enter the questions and answers for the very young.

Dotplot
This is a rather obscure program which compares protein molecules and DNA molecules in terms of the number of amino acids present in protein and the bases in DNA. Some sample molecules are supplied on disk. Pure DNA does not contain any amino acids so the logic escapes me! In any event, a plot within adjustable limits, may be obtained. Extensive manuals are on disk in Timeworks and Postcript formats. -
Life and Death (Game of Life)
This type of propagation program is well known and goes back a long way in computing. Chris Skellern has presented this one in a very tidy fashion and the rules of the game are well explained. Demos of different growth patterns are available. Alternatively you can create your own and watch the fascinating growth patterns. -
MolSys 0.73
This is a program for chemists and biochemists at University or Postgraduate level. Load cyclohexane as an example from the 48 molecules available (arginine, glucose and so forth). Now play around with all the facilities such as rotation, enlarging or shrinking the molecule, study bond angles from different atoms in the molecule, translate the atoms into bond energy fields, delete or substitute individual atoms and build up your own molecular structures from text book data. A second screen provides another panel of icons with radicals -Cl, -OH, methyl and many, many more to add to the molecule. Van der Waals energies may be calculated and text added to the molecule. Save to disk and build up your molecule - the program will not allow nonsense entries.

From Picts to Parliament Part II
This continuation of an unusual but factual look at History by Evelyn Mills is the second disk in the series. Disk one is on EDU.3325. There are 3O Tiny screens full of drawings and humourous text (very accurate) covering the period from the reign of William the Conqueror to Henry III. If this can't make you raise a grin as you learn, then what will! It is a good idea to get both disks and build up the 'Irreverent look at History' as you go along. Highly recommended educationally and good fun. Works best in colour but will run in mono.
