ST-Computer PD

ST-Computer, also known as "series S", is one of the biggest public domain series for the Atari ST at 1000 disks. Originally published from 1986 to 1996, the series showed the growing sophistication of Atari ST software and the slow change towards more multitasking-friendly and cleanly written applications.

Wavetables, short sample sounds, are used, in addition the YM sound is mixed with the DMA sound. By combining different techniques, Turbochip plays tracks with up to seven channels.

    The Enhancer extends the ATARI VDI with the new VDI functions for managing off-screen bitmaps and with the function vq_scrninfo(). Already included in NVDI.
  • Puzzle 97
    A jigsaw puzzle game which runs in any resolution. Load up an IMG file (its colour depth must not exceed that of the current resolution) and select whether you want the puzzle made up from large, medium or small sized pieces. The actual number of pieces varies dependent on the size of the image. You are then presented with a conventional jigsaw puzzle on screen in a scrollable GEM window. Unlike the real life scenario, all pieces are the right way up. You can place pieces directly onto the playing area or build up sections of the puzzle independently of each other then move them into place on the main puzzle. Unfortunately the program and docs are in German and Polish but it can be picked up in five minutes as everyone knows how to make up a jigsaw puzzle! This is the best ever attempt at such a program. Several example files are supplied on disk and you can save semi-completed puzzles at any time and resume them at a later date. On an STE, TT or Falcon, you even get stereo sound effects! Runs fine on an FM too. If you don't have NVDI installed, you need to run the supplied ENHANCER program, otherwise PUZZLE97 won't work.

    Tumble is simply a program that takes two points on the screen and moves them each in one of eight directions (N, NW, W...), and then draws a line between the two points. What makes it entertaining is that this can leave interesting patterns on the screen. By altering the distance each point moves each time you can create moire patterns.

You can even change the number of teams in the league, name of the league and other details. Like other manager type games, you can buy and sell players and have to avoid going bust! Statistics are given for player attributes, top scorers, league tables and much more. You also get the option to "see" the match. This gives you a running commentary (text not speech) throughout the match and you hear the noise of the crowd and the players on the pitch, all in glorious stereo! A well thought out football manager game which is multi-tasking friendly, runs in any resolution and is customisable to take account of player/manager changes, promotion/relegation and such like.

You do not have to win every race but you do need to maintain the lead, otherwise the game ends. If you do complete all 25 tracks, it's back to the beginning but the gameplay accelerates.

Intended for programmers, Origami understands several languages, but has no word wrap so is not for general word processing. A mega program with documentation to match along with comprehensive reconfiguration and macro features.

    A light synthesiser/pattern generator program similar in many ways to Jeff Minter's Trip-A-Tron (ART.3487). Patterns are generated by mouse movement but the emphasis is less reliant on the actual movement and more so on the way the mouse is moved. Dim the lights and play around with this one. You'll be amazed with some of the results you get. You can even try running it with a screen magnifier or mouse speeder program installed and watch how the display changes.

The game itself involves moving a variety of objects, arrows and bridges, around the screen in order to guide your penguins safely through a multitude of levels. With four penguins to guide at a time, it can become a bit of a challenge.

It records music on the ENTIRE last partition of any hard drive, so make sure the last partitions of all connected units are free or else you will lose whatever data was on them.

    GemCell is the GEM version of a Windows95/NT game called FreeCell. The aim of the game is to place the pieces starting from the ace and ascending, a kind of patience. A nice GEM game that runs on all computers and also in color.

    What the program does is to interpret a note on/off command as an instruction to generate a random color. Therefore, the faster you play, the faster the program changes the screen's colors.

Freedom2, for example, is such a program. Without Liberty Freedom2 is not executable, because it uses many of the Liberty functions.

Now while you are away from my computer you don't have to worry about the kitty or kids playing with the keyboard, inadvertantly adding to your documents, closing folders, etc! Upon your return, hit escape to clear any stray characters from the text field, type "KittyLck" and press return and you can once again resume computing.
