The KGMD is a complete Unix distribution. The init takes care of the multi-user capability and that a getty is started on the virtual consoles, which in turn takes care of the login prompt. After logging in, the user can use both tcsh and bash for interactive work. Standard commands like ls or date are part of the distribution as well as the C-compiler gcc and an extensive help system.
